[Verse]
Down at the track where the fast dogs run,
Lived a lean ol’ hound who was second to none.
Jimmy the Greyhound, just three legs strong,
But he’d spin you a yarn that’d last all night long.
He’d puff out his chest and wag that tail,
Say, “Boys, gather ’round for a whopper of a tale!
I was tellin’ Sam and Andy, clear as day,
How I smoked the Tallahassee Kid in the State Derby way!”
[Chorus]
Oh, Jimmy, three-legged Jimmy,
Fastest tripod you ever did see!
Hoppin’ and boppin’ down the line,
Leavin’ legends eatin’ dust ’hind!
Jimmy, ol’ Jimmy, king of the spin,
With a wink and a grin, he’d swear he’d win!
[Verse]
“That Kid was s’posed to be lightning in fur,
But I lined up beside him—didn’t even stir.
He barked, ‘You’ll eat my dust, old hop-along flea!’
I just smiled real sweet and said, ‘Son, we’ll see.’”
Bang went the gun, and away we flew,
Just me and the Kid, neck-and-neck it was true.
Into the last turn, a two-dog fight,
I gave that ol’ kick with all of my might!
[Chorus]
Oh, Jimmy, three-legged Jimmy,
Fastest tripod you ever did see!
Hoppin’ and boppin’ down the line,
Leavin’ legends eatin’ dust ’hind!
Jimmy, ol’ Jimmy, king of the spin,
With a wink and a grin, he’d swear he’d win!
[Verse]
Nose out front by a length or more,
Crossed that line like never before.
I trotted back slow, cool as you please,
Asked that sulkin’ Kid, “How’s the taste of my breeze?”
He tucked tail and ran, never looked back,
Retired down south on a gator shack track.
Now he’s livin’ with reptiles, snappin’ and mean—
Guess he finally found dust that bites back clean!
[Bridge]
The other dogs laughed till their sides near split,
But Sergeant leaned close and whispered a bit:
“He’s crazy to think I’d swallow that lie.”
Flash chuckled low, “Yeah… but who’d live with gators? Good bye!”
[Chorus]
Oh, Jimmy, three-legged Jimmy,
Fastest tripod you ever did see!
Hoppin’ and boppin’, tall tales fly,
Makin’ us laugh till we nearly cry!
Jimmy, ol’ Jimmy, our hero, our friend,
Three legs, big heart, yarns without end!
So raise a paw high for the hound with the limp, Jimmy’s still runnin’… at least in his script!
