#68 I Called You Mongrel

[Verse]

In the old tin-roof barn at Pantak, where the mountain wind moans low,

On a cold and raging stormy night, a tiny Rottweiler came slow.

Smallest of the litter, one blue eye shining through the rain,

Alexander stood there frozen, haunted by his mama’s pain.

He saw that fragile little life and the fear rose up inside,

Whispered low, “That mongrel’s weak,” and turned his face to hide.

But Millicent held him gentle, breathed “Gunther” soft and sweet,

While Alexander’s broken heart refused to let love meet.

[Chorus]

Oh, the prodigal comes home… that little runt returns!

This old Rottweiler’s walls are crumbling, and the old heart finally burns.

“Gunther, my boy, forgive me… Lord, I done you wrong,

I see that true Rottweiler fire burning bright and strong.”

From the wild Divine Mountain, through the hunger and the rain,

You found your way back to these arms, never to wander again.

Let these old wounds start to heal, let the forgiveness gently flow,

In a daddy’s love we find the grace that makes the broken whole.

[Verse]

Gunther chased his bigger brothers through the hollows dark and deep,

Climbed those rocky mountain trails where the lonely eagles sweep.

Faced that bear with steady courage, though he barely reached its knee,

Saved the whole pack when the storm came down beneath those cold starlit skies.

Lost out in the world then found, then lost back to the wild once more,

Swam that angry river raging till his faith carried him to shore.

While Alexander paced the empty yard with a guilt he couldn’t hide,

He realized on that lonesome ridge what it meant to lose his pride.

[Bridge]

Just like that Bible story, the son who wandered far and wide,

Gunther came back stronger, with quiet Rottweiler pride.

Alexander dropped down in the straw, voice cracking through the tears,

“My boy, I called you Mongrel… can you ever forgive your pa?”

No more names that cut so deep, no more fear inside my chest,

You’re the smallest one who proved us wrong—you are the very best.

[Chorus]

Oh, the prodigal comes home… yeah, that brave little runt returns!

Alexander’s holding him tight while the old heart softly burns.

“Gunther, you’re my champion now, that blue eye sees the truth,

We’ll stand together side by side, through the morning and the blue.”

Hallelujah, thank You Lord, for the weakest and the least,

He came home and brought us healing, and this family is at peace.

From this old barn to the mountain high, we’ll tell this story true, Of Gunther the Rottweiler… the prodigal I love like new.
